North Star is a collaboration of primary schools across North Yorkshire, led by Meadowside Academy in Knaresborough. We were designated in the Spring of 2014 and are proud to support schools throughout the region and to provide high-quality initial teacher training through our successful School Direct programme.
We work with strategic partners including North Yorkshire Primary Teaching School Alliances (NYPSTA), the Local Authority, Leeds Trinity University, the Teaching Schools Council, the Regional Schools Commission, Carnegie Leaders in Learning, York St John University and others.
Our vision is to embed a culture of truly continual professional development for all teachers and TAs at every level. We are not a top-down school-improvement service – we are a facilitation service for schools and their staff to improve their own practice through collaboration and research. Our CPLD offer is built on programmes that develop an individual’s skills and practice over time and through working with others, complemented by bespoke training that meets specific need. Our approach to each of the areas of focus (CPLD, iTT, and School to School Support) is underpinned by this vision and we strive to make it relevant to all members from trainees taking their first steps into teaching to the most experienced Head Teachers.
Train to Teach
School Direct Initial Teacher Training Programme
North Star is working in partnership with Leeds Trinity University to offer early years and primary training places on the School Direct programme.
What is School Direct?
School Direct is a school-led teacher-training programme that allows trainees to learn from experienced and inspirational teachers working in schools within our alliance. Students will have the advantage of learning on the job, but will be well supported by a dedicated team of teachers and Leeds Trinity University trainers, who will guide them every step of the way.
Our School Direct programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and PGCE. It is a full-time course running from September until June, during which time students will spend four days per week in the classroom and one day at our hub in Knaresborough. In school, trainees will work up from observing teachers and other school professionals to teaching 80% of the time. On the weekly hub days, trainees will receive professional studies and curriculum tutoring from Leeds Trinity tutors and North Star Specialist Leaders.
North Star has a wide membership of primary schools across the region, ranging from town schools to tiny village schools, faith and community schools, nursery and forces schools and spreading from Northallerton down to Selby, Ripon across to Pickering. We work closely with successful applicants to place them in schools that are both convenient and can offer the breadth of experience to provide the very best start to their career. All partner schools are committed to supporting entrants to the profession and sharing with trainee teachers their expertise, skills and passion.
